Monster Shag Cake

How can you not love a Monster Shag Cake?  For Halloween or any birthday, children will delight in this scary-cute confection.  And, whoever bakes this will delight in that it’s not a tricky cake to make at all!

Follow along with my tutorial, and you’ll understand what I mean!

This cake is a cute 6-inch, 3-layer cake.  I’ve used my 6-Inch Birthday Cake recipe, but you can use any recipe that you love.  You can even use a boxed-cake recipe, if that makes you happy!

Make the cake, let it cool, layer it, and then frost it with a crumb coat.  As a reminder (but I explain it at the end of the 6-Inch Birthday Cake recipe), you will want to put one cake layer on your platter or turntable, add some frosting to the middle and spread it and then add the second layer.  Repeat for the third layer and then frost the top and sides with a very thin coating of frosting.  It’s okay for the cake to show through.  You are trying to catch all of the crumbs in this layer and secure them to the frosting so they don’t end up in the finished design.

Refrigerate the coated cake for about 15 minutes to firm up the frosting.

While you are doing that, divide the remaining frosting into 5 bowls and tint the frosting 5 different colors.  Any colors will work; it’s all about your preference!

After the frosting is tinted, place a grass tip (Wilton #233) into each piping bag.  It may seem like a waste to buy 5 tips (if you have a baking supply store in your area, try to find the tips there. At ABC Cake Decorating Store in Phoenix, the tips were $1.29 each), but when you are using 5 different colors of frosting, this is the easiest and quickest way to frost this cake.

Starting on the bottom third of the cake, pipe the first shag monster. It should be an imperfect, blob-like color block. To create the shag, hover the piping tip close to the surface of the cake and squeeze the piping bag until the buttercream makes contact with the surface of the cake, then pull the tip away from the cake while you release pressure. This can take some practice, so feel free to perfect your shag piping on a glass or jar before piping directly onto the cake.

Pipe the next shag monster in a different color directly next to the first. Feel free to make this one a little taller or shorter than the first shag monster for variety. Repeat adding the shag monster color blocks all around the bottom third of the cake.

Add a second row of shag monsters on top of the first row. Be sure to leave enough room for a third row of shag monsters.

Add the final row of shag monsters on the top third of the cake and continue the shag onto the very top. Keep going until you’ve got color blocks covering every inch of the cake.

Add a set of candy eyeballs to each shag color block to bring the monsters to life. Some could have just one eyeball, others could have five eyeballs or more. Feel free to use your imagination here and create some variety!  This set of Wilton candy eyeballs really came in handy for this cake. It comes with three different sizes of eyeballs!

This fun shaggy cake will be the hit of any Halloween or birthday party.  Have fun making this beauty!
