Hugo Spritz

A Hugo Spritz is a wonderful way to refresh yourself, just as you would an Aperol Spritz, but without the bitterness.  This light spritz seems to be the current darling of the cocktail circuit…even my very chic son (haha) ordered it last time we were out!

Made with elderflower liqueur, mint, Prosecco and seltzer (aka club soda), it is a simple drink and oh so delicious!  

This cocktail originated in South Tyrol, Italy in 2005 and in case you’re interested, there is no Hugo!  This was just the name that the bartender, Roland Gruber, came up with.  

Elderflower Liqueur is the star of this spritz.  It has a fruity and floral taste, but is very light.  None of the flavors are overwhelming, which makes it ideal for this year-round drink.

Gently bruise the mint leaves so that the oils release and add the leaves to chilled wine glasses.  

Fill with ice and then add in the elderflower liqueur, Prosecco and seltzer.  Stir to combine and then top with a lemon or lime wheel and more mint.

Off you go to your patio!!

Hugo Spritz

Makes: 2 drinks

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce elderflower liqueur, such as St-Germain
  • 2 sprig mint, plus 4-5 sprigs for garnish
  • 8 ounces Prosecco, chilled
  • 2 ounces seltzer, chilled
  • Lemon or lime wheel, for garnish

Instructions

Strip the leaves off the mint sprigs. Lightly slap the leaves in the palm of your hand to release the oils, add to chilled white wine glasses.

Fill the glasses with ice, then add in the elderflower liqueur, chilled Prosecco and seltzer. Stir briefly to combine.

Garnish by placing a lemon or lime wheel into the glass, alongside a bouquet of 2–3 additional mint sprigs.
